February 22, 2008 - Paul Holmgren was born on December 2, 1955 in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Holmgren is best known for his role as General Manager for the Philadelphia Flyers as well as the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms.
Prior to becoming General Manager, Holmgren participated in the National Hockey League for 10 years. Holmgren was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers during the 1975 NHL Draft as the 108th pick. Holmgren first started his career as a member of the Fighting Saints, which folded by the following year. After signing with the Flyers, he made his debut in the NHL a month later. Nearly ending his career, Holmgren suffered a scratched cornea that required surgery. An allergic reaction to the anesthetic nearly proved fatal.
For the next eight seasons, Holmgren remained a part of the Flyers. During his time, he earned career highs during several seasons such as 30 goals, 65 points and 10 assists. In 1981, Holmgren was invited to the NHL All-Star Game as well as the 1981 Canada Cup team. By 1983, Holmgren's time with the Philadelphia Flyers came to a close. That year he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars. Playing only 27 regular gamse and 15 playoff games with the North Stars, Holmgren retired in 1984.
After his retirement, Holmgren chose to movie immediately into coaching. In the beginning, he started out as the Assistant Coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. When Mike Kennan was fired, Holmgren took over. Holmgren made history by becoming the first former Flyer player to be named Head Coach. He spent four years coaching the Flyers before moving on to coach the Hartford Whalers. In 1998, Holmgren returned to his former team and served as the Assistant General Manger. He didn't receive the full title until 2006.
